Givers Never Lack, A Ploy To Rob Christians Or Not?
When I was seven or eight, I am not really sure the exact age I was then, but I know I was still a babe, and do not understand most things happening around me. I saw a sticker on a bumper, which reads “givers never lack”. It didn’t make any sense to me… how can giver not lack? I pondered on it for a few days but got no explanation. I didn’t want to ask the adults around me, because I was scared they will tell me what I didn’t want to hear “it is good to share your stuff with other people.”
When I was growing up, ministers of the gospel preached and still preaching the mystery behind giving. They backed it up with scriptures, but again, I was not ready to dive into the giving life. There was no tangible evidence to back their claims; the people around were not wealthy, and the rich people I know, were not willing to help the needy yet they were living their dream life.
Why Do You Give?
Years after, I became steadfast in serving God and His kingdom, I attended service more, and I started practicing giving-not because I love to do it, but becauseI felt obligated to do so. Secondly, most preachers tend to make Christians believe that their inconsistency in tithes and offerings are the reasons Christians are not living the life they wanted.
Giving Out Of Fear
I practiced giving without understanding the purpose for it. I gave, because the pastor said we should, not because Jesus Christ who is the Author and Finisher of our faith instructed us to give. I gave because I felt, if we do not give our tithes and offerings, we will be paving ways for the destroyers to come, closing the doors to more blessings, and God will punish us for not obeying the“giving law”.
The truth is, if these are the reasons you are giving to people around you, or paying your tithes then you are wrong. Many Christians believe giving is trade by barter, when I give this, I will get that in return. When such instances do not work, the givers become frustrated. Do you want to hear or in this case, read something interesting? God loves you with or without your tithe.
Letus focus on giving and not tithe now… I need you to pause right now and think about your giving lately. Are you giving because you are scared of the consequences, or do you give because you love to give?
Here is what you will not hear every day-giving is essential in life. Christianity was birthed on giving.
John3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God so loved… not God so feared, or God felt obligated, but He so much loved you and me, that He sacrificed His only Son Jesus Christ to save us. You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.
God, our Heavenly Father, thought of us even before our parents gave birth to us. Jesus Christ died for us way before we heard about Him. So, what made you think He will be angry with you if you do not pay your tithe or give to the church?
The position you are occupying today, He enabled you to get it. Deuteronomy 8:18 “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.”
The Right Mindset Of Giving
Give in Love
God is more interested in the state of your heart than what is in your hand 2 Corinthians 8:12 “For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.”
The reason our offerings, of help to the needy around us, is not acceptable to Godis because we do not do it in love-instead, we think of the possible things we will gain from it.
1 Corinthians 13:3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Christianity sprung from love and then giving. You need to LOVE first before you give. When you genuinely love God, you will love His people.
How can you love God whom you have not seen, and hate your brothers who live around you? 1 John 4:20. Is your giving wrapped in love, or what you hope to collect in return?
Give In Secret
This is the jet age-it is easy for everything to be placed on the internet, including your act of kindness. However, your acts of kindness should not announce to the public. Help people and keep it yourself, and let your Heavenly Father reward you in the open.
Matthew 6:2 NIV “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”
Give According To Your Level
ENCOURAGE YOURSELF: God knows the present level of every man; He sees the heart, He knows what you have and your current level.
2 Corinthians 9:6 “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall also reap bountifully.”
Some ministers of the Gospel have misinterpreted the above scripture; they have indirectly coerced Christians into giving more, instead of giving according to what the Lord has blessed them with. If you take a look at the next verse, 7-Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
When ever you give out of coercion, it will yield nothing.
