I Pay My Tithe, Why Am I Not Wealthy, Is Tithing A Scam? Part One

Tithing is one of the most controversial topics in the Christian world today. Several persons have been debating on the subject for an extended period of time. We cannot help but ask ourselves some deep questions. Many Christians have been secretly asking this question, hoping to get a genuine answer. I pray the Holy Spirit who is our Teacher, guides us towards the right path. Amen

Some months ago, I wrote about the same topic. I remember vividly taking sides with those who tithe, and how it is the “law” for all Christians to obey. This time, I find myself steering towards a different direction. As you read on, may the Lord open your understanding, in Jesus Name, Amen.

What Is Tithing?
2 Chronicles 31:4-5
Moreover, he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the Lord.

5 And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.

Will Tithing Make Me Wealthy?
Unfortunately, so many teachers of the Gospel have taught us or made us think, that tithing is the primary key to supernatural prosperity. Now I need you to concentrate here if you are paying your tithe hoping for a great door of wealth should be open to you, I am afraid you will be highly disappointed.

Tithing does not make you rich; it does not make you suddenly amass great wealth. You need to understand that, God does not need your ten percent before He can bless you. He is not a taskmaster but a Father to us all.
Romans 8:32 “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

Matthew 7:9-11 “Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Your tithing is not the recipe for wealth. Unfortunately, the reason why most of us pay tithe is fear of God taking the blessings He has given us.

Psalms 50:11-12 “For every beast of the forest is mine and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild animals of the field are mine.
12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine and the fullness thereof.

I cannot state it enough, but you have to understand that God does not need your permission in the form of tithe before He blesses you.
The birds of the air, He feeds them, yet they do not pay tithe. Do not get me wrong; I am not saying tithing is wrong. When you feel compelled to do pay your tithe, and you give it out of fear of being poor then it is wrong. For God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 “Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver.”
All through the New Testament, Jesus Christ did not make mention of tithe, neither did the apostles, they emphasize more on free will giving. Unfortunately, many Christians feel “trapped” because of tithes. Now hear this, the reason you are still poor is not that you refused to pay your tithe. It is because of your ignorance Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge…”

Misconceptions Of Tithing
There are some beliefs about tithing that have kept most believers under bondage. We have subjected ourselves to these beliefs; unfortunately, the church today is not helping matters. Let’s take some of the wrong impressions of tithing.

If You Do Not Tithe, The Devourers Will Destroy Your Source Of Income
God is love, and He says we are the apple of Eyes. Zechariah 2:8 “For thus says the Lord of hosts; after the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that touches you touches the apple of his eye.” The scripture did not state, give me your tithe, and I will protect you. God is our Father, and what is the duty of a Father? To provide and to protect his children isn’t it.

When you were growing up, did your father ask for a fee before he protects you? Now if you earthly father, with all his limitations and shortcomings provided and protected you, why do you think God needs your one-tenth of your earnings before He assumes His responsibilities?

God is your source of finances, He is the one behind your profit, Deuteronomy 8:18 “But thou shall remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that gives thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” So, why will He sit back and watch the “devourers” spoil what He has given you?

The word “remember me” does not connote tithing, it means to acknowledge Him. God wants you to acknowledge Him as the Source behind your profit. He gave you the idea in the first place, so return the glory to Him.

Furthermore, as Christians, we are translated from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of Light, so no enemy is permitted to touch us. Ephesians 1:20-23.

You do not need to bribe God with one-tenth of your profit before He protects you. You are already above principalities and powers.
Here is a question you need to answer with all sincerity. Are all the billionaires around you Christians? Do they pay their tithe? Why didn’t the devourers devour their wealth?
If we still need to pay tithe to secure our businesses, then Jesus Christ came to this earth for nothing. Alas! He came so that we may have life in abundance (John 10:10), He came to show us the truth

John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
The Old Testament is not perfect; it shouldn’t rely on it without the confirming from the New Testament. If the Old Testament is complete, there would not have been a reason to create the New Testament; Jesus Christ would not have bothered showing us the way if the old path was perfect.

Tithing Will Make You Rich
The second misconception is tithing will make you rich, a lot of us are tithing mainly because of this reason. I am guilty of this; I tithe I believed it is the secret of supernatural wealth. Do not be deceived; tithing will not make you rich.

Deuteronomy 28:12 “The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.”

Look at the verse closely, what do you see? The Lord will bless the work of your hands and not your tithe. If you like you tithe from January to December, if you are not working, you will not be blessed.

Abraham was a rancher, a shepherd, raising livestock and farming the land and God blessed his works. Genesis 24:1 “And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.”

You cannot be slothful, and depend on God for blessings; it does not work that way. He needs to bless the work of your hands. It is funny how we pray morning and night for God to open His heavens, yet we do not want to work.

The blessings of Abraham we sing in churches today will not work in our lives if we refuse to be as hardworking as Abraham.

Proverbs 6:6-9 “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

Tithing Will Draw You Closer To God
It is so unfortunate that these misconceptions were gotten from men of God. Your tithe does not move God to bless you. He created the universe and everything in it, so tell me why He will love you less if you do not give one-tenth of what He gave you in the first place. I am not telling you all these to make you stop giving tithes, I am showing all these to make you re-evaluate yourself; free yourself from all forms of bondage you’ve unknowingly put yourself.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God loves you before you became born-again, He had you in mind when He sent His Son Jesus Christ to this world. You were not a “tither,” yet Jesus Christ died for you so that you can have everlasting life. He did not hate you when you were in the world, so why do you think he will hate you if you do not return one-tenth of what He has blessed you with?

Tithing Will Bring “Meat” To God’s House
Some of us have taken the “burden” to pay their tithe as a means of enriching the church. Although this reason was born out of genuine fondness for the things of the Kingdom, it is still not enough reason to “subject” yourself or compel people to pay tithe. When you start seeing your tithe as a means to help God, then you have missed it. Our God is all-sufficient, we are too small to help Him. He created the world and everything in it in less than a week! You think He cannot provide for the Church?

Encourage Yourself: Jesus Christ and His Apostles preached and practiced the act of giving. There is no place in the bible where God loves a cheerful “tither” instead, He loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7

Again, the Bible implores us to live a life of giving- Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over [with no space left for more]. For with the standard of measurement you use [when you do good to others], it will be measured to you in return.”
