How To Properly Care For Your Feet

The feet are two of the most used parts of your body, needed for all the walking and daily running around. It is responsible for absorbing the impact of your full body weight and keeping you balanced and upright while you move. Despite the obvious importance of the feet, however, it is often neglected during hygiene and not properly taken care of.

Taking care of your feet properly is very important as there are a number of problems which can afflict them when they are not well cared for. These problems include; foot odor, fungal disinfection, ingrown toenails, corns e.t.c. Here are five ways to properly care for your feet.

•Wash Your Feet Every day: Washing the feet is very important, as the feet tend to get sweatier and dirtier than other parts of the body. This is because the feet are trapped inside your shoes for the most part of the day. The moisture is fertile ground for bacteria and fungi which leads to foot odor, and consequently fungal infections. The feet should be washed daily with warm water and soap. Attention should be paid to the space between the toes and the toenails as they are breeding ground for germs. The feet should be properly dried after washing, to effectively wipe out bacteria-harboring moisture.

•Moisturize Your Feet: Although moisture breeds bacteria, it is needed to keep your feet soft and healthy. Dry skin on the feet would result in cracked or scaly skin, making moisturizing very important. The drill is to apply the right amount of lotion or petroleum jelly on the feet, and avoiding the area between your toes. A good way to achieve this is applying lotion at night and putting on some sock. You will find your feet very soft in the morning.

•Wear Comfortable Footwear: In caring for the feet, you need to always wear comfortable shoes. Tight shoes cause corns, hammer toe, ingrown toenails, and pains, while oversized shoes cause sore heel and blisters. Get shoes that fit comfortably, and are of good materials. Natural materials like cotton and leather are the best as they release moisture and keep your feet cooler. The weather condition should also be considered when you choose your footwear. Sandals are good for summer, while waterproof boots and socks are suitable for winter.

•Give Yourself a Pedicure Regularly: A pedicure does not necessarily require a trip to the salon. You can do it all by yourself right in the comfort of your home. You can start by massaging your feet, ensuring to knead the soles and stretch the toes. This should be followed up by soaking your feet in lukewarm water, for 5 to 10 minutes. Soaking the feet helps to soften hard skin and prepare the toenails for trimming. The toenails should be trimmed short and straight across. Cutting it short helps prevent germs, and cutting it across prevent ingrown toenails.

•Address Your Foot Problems Early: In the event of developing any foot problem, it is necessary to address the problem quickly. Some of these problems can be treated at home. Foot fungus can be treated by applying an antifungal cream. Ingrown toenails can also be addressed by cutting out the growth. In the case of foot pains and infections, it is important to see a podiatrist.

These processes might prove stressful to keep up with, but it is necessary to encourage yourself to do it. This is because having healthy feet is a major key to being ahead in your day to day activities.
